Spring/Summer 24 on the Permanent Style shop
Hello lovely readers,
Here’s our regular update on what’s coming into the PS Shop over the next few months - apologies for the short delay.
This only covers Spring/Summer, but feel free to ask in the comments about anything in Autumn/Winter, and we’ll give us much information as we currently have. Just bear in mind a lot of things won’t be confirmed.
That goes for questions in general too - please ask in the comments rather than email, DM or anything else. It avoids us answering the same question lots of times, and turns the comments section into a bit of an FAQ.
As per usual, keep in mind that we can’t detail everything in advance and some timings might change (I swear communications is the most important thing about running a factory). There may also be one or two new launches which have yet to be confirmed and will drop into this season.
Finally, we will be moving this year to more regular shop emails announcing new products and restocks. So if you want to get alerts on all products, rather than just a waiting list for one specific restock, sign up to that list here. There won’t be many of those, usually a couple a month.
If you already receive editorial emails from us, you’ll have to update your preferences by receiving a link - sorry that’s a bit of a faff.
Oh, and we will have our normal pop-ups this year, but details will be announced next week. Any stock that arrives before the pop-up will then be on display to see and try there.
Thanks, it’ll be an exciting year!
March
- Oxford shirts restock - A final run of pink stripes (above) and green stripes, at least for a while, plus the perennials of blue, white, and blue/white. And cloth in all five
- New product - An outerwear piece for Spring/Summer, something readers have been asking about for a while. We don’t quite have details yet, but those will come in a couple of weeks.
- Pre-orders. The pre-order programme we’ve run for the last couple of years will focus on our most popular knitwear this year - the Cashmere Crewnecks and the Rugbys.
- We want to do it with the Crewneck in particular because it’s been so popular and we want to make sure everyone has a chance to get one.
- It will be available for all past colours, plus a new one for the Rugby and three new ones (three!) for the crewneck.
- The pre-order window will run through the pop-up, so you will be able to see the new colours in person. Delivery will be in October.
- The Casual Style Guide - Our successor to 2018's book 'The Style Guide' will be out this month, both online and with dozens of stockists around the world. Still in partnership with the photographer Jamie Ferguson, it draws on his extensive archive of street-style shots to put together a guide to different types of casual style, from sleek and tonal Scandinavian to rough and ready workwear.
April
- Linen overshirts - Now the summer products in force. First, the linen overshirt, in particular the popular dark brown that was never restocked last year. Also navy, olive and one new colour
- The Finest Polo - Restocking in navy, cream and a new dark brown
- PS Shorts - Coming back in navy and khaki
- New denim shirts - The replacement for our Everyday Denim, in blue and black
- Hand-framed cotton crewneck - A beautiful new product, in navy and cream
- The Dartmoor - Restock of navy, plus a new cream and new charcoal
- The Finest Crewneck - Restock of navy (below) and charcoal
May
- The Linen Harrington - Restock of the dark navy, plus a lovely dark brown
- The Friday Polo - Our new design from last year, in the same navy and white
- The summer shirt - A new product, details coming closer to the time
And…unconfirmed
- Tapered T-Shirts - These have been ordered in a larger number than before to try and cope with demand, but we don’t currently have a firm delivery date.
- Black Bullskin Tote - Reordered last year, but again no firm delivery date
- Navy Reversible Suede jacket - This has been delayed but will hopefully be ready in May
- Undershirts - Unfortunately the supplier here is no longer available, but we’re working on a new manufacture
Please let us know if there’s anything here you’re not sure about, again in the comments below - or if this reminds you there’s something you’d like to see in the future, again let us know.
Dear Simon,
lovely new products and restocks coming up! Is it already foreseeable Rider’s Raincoat will be restocked, maybe even in an updated version as you sometimes do with first releases? That’s one of those products that I really missed out on.
Yes, we will be restocking it in the Autumn, in the first colour and hopefully a second one too
Excited to hear!
Hi Simon,
On this note, do you find this coat works in the spring or summer, or is it too hot for that?
Thank you!
I find it works as well as most raincoats can do in spring and summer, yes. Hence wearing it with a T-shirt and jeans in the images
Hi Simon,
I was hoping to see some notes today about the decision in making all the current and past donegal fabrics available to buy?
Have you got an update?
We don’t have absolute confirmation, but the plan is to still to offer the donegal fabrics, yes, alongside the other PS fabrics, in the autumn (tweeds and plaid)
Is there a plan for a new denim shirt fabric being offered as cut length as well?
Not at the moment, but we’ll see what people think when they see the shirts.
Would the Escorial Tweeds be returning in this run as well? Or just the Shetland and Harris? I would love another opportunity to buy the Escorial tweeds.
No, the Escorial Tweed won’t be returning I’m afraid Ben
Simon,
Are you referring to the donegal fabrics for the raglan coats?
Yes
Hi Simon, an exciting list of products!
If I were considering the wax walker versus the new spring/summer outerwear piece, would you say they fulfill similar functions or completely different?
Also, another year it would be great to have the finest polo restocked in mid-grey.
Thanks!
Very different really – the wax walker isn’t really spring/summer
Noted on the grey, thanks
Many thanks Simon. Can I ask whether the new outerwear will be formal or casual? No further questions, I promise!
No worries. I’d say in between – as a lot of our things are, and something like the Linen Harrington is as well
Hi Simon
I would love to see the Dartmoor + Finest polo in dark brown!
Thanks Joseph – did you see it says already we’re doing the Finest Polo in dark brown?
Thrilled to see the Dartmoor back in cream. To confirm, will this will be the same cream that was previously available? I’ve since gained a size so I’m keen to replace my old one.
Nice! Yes it will be
Thanks Simon! I must have read the post too quickly! That is great news….
any plans to restock the denim shirting material ?
No, all the denim is being replaced with the new shirts. The old material was becoming too hard to weave and maintain (without fading) I’m afraid
The new denim will be only shirts or cloth too? And the same for the summer shirt – cloth as well?
See above – both just shirts for the moment
Thanks for the update,
I really love all your outerwear. I can unfortunately not justify buying all of it what I want.
Sorry about the undershirts. I fortunately bought four of them last fall.
Lovely to hear Carl, thanks.
Nice work on the undershirts. I’m hopeful we can get them made again
I mentioned this during last autumn’s New York pop-up, but I would get a Linen Harrington if the openings of the interior pockets were a touch larger. Currently, it’s too snug to get a (normal-sized, not overstuffed) wallet in and out easily.
You did, thank you for raising it again. I’ll check whether it is possible – I know they’re rather limited by the width of the facing
Agree, I can fit a money clip in my Harrrington but none of my wallets fit — not even the smallest. Not a deal breaker as far as I’m concerned but would definitely recommend a wider interior pocket.
Thanks, I have asked and we’re looking into what space there is
Simon
How is your long gestating smart/casual trousers/chino project coming along?
No real news. It will make a good story if it does eventually happen!
Oh, is it finally time for that pink gab jacket or is this a seperate outerwear item?
Separate I’m afraid, the gab jacket isn’t likely to happen or at least not soon
Hi Simon,
A note to say how lovely the “Finest Crewneck” has turned out to be.
I would be most interested if similar options were made available in a V-neck at some point in the future if that might be possible?
Thanks Joe. We did do a V-neck in the past and can look at it again. There seem to be so many knitwear ideas!
Hey,Simon
For the Ps short please please do the 28 waist size
As a small Asian guy ,i found it quite frustrated when most of the good brand only begin at size 30.
Josh
It’s too late for this year I’m afraid Josh, but can certainly bear it in mind for next year.
Does it ever work to take in the waist? Or is everything else then too big?
mostly on the waist but tbh,by paying this much money is like an investment for a long term therefore i usually expect things to be perfect as delivered
further question Simon,if i decided to buy the garment will taking in the waist affects any other part of it such as the proportion
Thank you
Josh
I’m not sure that’s necessarily a good attitude Josh – bespoke could after all be thought of as a set of extensive alterations. I’d take every opportunity I can to have something altered to fit better, and few RTW fits perfectly
Whether it affects the proportion depends on how much you need to take in and from wear.
Thanks to enlighting me i know even before asking the question that my attitude toward thing is a bit weird but i believe in some aspect it does make sense.
I believe we are just living in the different country where the amount of reliable tailor counts into consideration whether or not should the garment be alternated.
Thanks
Josh
That’s true Josh, it certainly makes a difference.
I do think it plays into a larger theme though, of having to make an effort with your clothing. The more we prioritise convenience and price, the more brands will give us that at the expense of quality and everything else that comes with good clothing. Learn to look after your shoes, brush your clothes, hand wash your knits and delicates
It becomes quite a gamble if the waist is too much off. I buy way too much stuff online and have a pile of unsellable altered wrecks. Taking the waist in a size (if the rest is good) can work, or it might be a disaster – and you can’t return a disaster.
Interesting, be good to talk about that some time Aaron. Obviously much more of a risk if you’re taking in a whole size, but still I’m surprised you had that many issues
Josh,
i have a similar problem with waist sizes. I have had the waist brought in on all three colors, bought from various production cycles. And had the hems shortened. They have worked really well.
+1 on the request to start from size 28 inch waist size. Thanks, Simon
Hi Simon
What heppened to the book about casual clothing? Was that not supposed to come in this fall or is it fall of 2024?
Thanks.
/Hannes
It was a bit delayed but will actually be out next month – sorry didn’t include it as I didn’t think of it as a product in the same way
The cotton crewnecks sound exciting! I picked up one in Light Natural from Anderson and Sheppard last year and it has proven to be very versatile. Maybe time to pickup a Navy.
Will the design of yours differ significantly from those at A&S?
Yes I would say so, certainly the cut and a bit the yarn and the make
Very much looking forward to this Simon. Was tempted by the A&S ones but not bought any yet.
Been looking for something I can wear flexibly in the warmer months especially in the evening for dinner/drinks etc. Will they be more on the casual or less so end of the spectrum? Or perhaps somewhere in between with all the fine detailing one would expect of the PS products?
Also looking forward to adding the brown finest polo to the navy and light grey I currently have. Will it be a similar brown to the indulgent cardigan?
The rest of the list also looks excellent including the book (out next month – I read all the comments 🤓).
Keep going and I am going to have enough planned purchases to keep me going for a while!
Thanks Yash!
The brown is similar, yes, and the cotton crewneck is quite casual, wearable with jeans certainly. But a very high level of make (hand framed)
Sounds perfect. Many thanks Simon!
Wonderful news! Can I ask when the pre-order programme begins for the Rugby and Cashmere Crewneck?
Should be mid-March
Is there any chance you can let us know what the new color is? It would be amazing to get it in black, WL’s ‘Scout’ color, or a dark/cold shade of green similar to that available for the current Dartmoor, which is fantastic.
No, sorry
Sad to see the pink oxford shirts aren’t coming back this season.
I am looking forward to seeing the summer out-wear. Do you mind sharing if it’s designed for the same sort of weather as the Linen Harrington, or perhaps cooler?
Hard to get into too much detail! But I’d say a little cooler
Hoping the new outerwear is a hooded raincoat!
This is Spring/Summer Gede, so no!
For some of us, spring/summer is when we get the most rain!
Personally, though, I have too many raincoats and don’t need another one. I am very intrigued by what this project might be.
I’d also vote for a lightweight, breathable, mid-thigh-length, hooded raincoat — in a non-synthetic fabric. It does rain during spring/summer in many parts of the world, e.g. Sydney. In fact, it’s raining here today
Thanks Nathan, noted. Personally I’m not sure I’d do a hood in that style of jacket, but it is good to have the input
Pre-orders for the Cashmere Crewneck is a great idea, and one that I’ll certainly jump on. I was also looking at a cotton crewneck and was very close to purchasing one from The Anthology but I’ll definitely wait to see this new product first.
Are you able to divulge any information about the Summer Shirt? I’m picturing a short sleeve camp-collar shirt.
Great, thanks Guy. Not really on the summer shirt, but it is not short sleeved
Hi Simon,
Not sure how much you can comment on the new summer shirt for now, but do you plan on offering the cloth for bespoke use?
We don’t at the moment, no Daniel
Dear Simon,
Lovely products and quite a list – I must say.
Please can you share (or allowed to share) from which mill the shirt fabrics are from. I have decided that for bespoke shirts I will use only albini / Thomas Mason, hence the query.
Best
AKG
Do you mind if I ask why AKG? The top-end mills are pretty similar in what they produce.
Of course. Reason being I don’t know any other top end mills for shirts. 😊 so, lack of knowledge has pushed me towards one of the most famous, and dare I say, expensive mill.
I see. Well they’re not the most expensive! It depends more on the cloth, and then someone like Alumo is often more expensive, as is Carlo Riva and Solbiati. Also Italian mills like Canclini are just as good.
There is a breakdown of them here.
Just a question about the Dartmoor and Fall/Winter. Do you have other Dartmoor colors “in the pipeline” than the ones you are announcing for the Spring/Summer.
Not at the moment Carl, we haven’t thought about the order after this one
Will there be a pop-up Stateside to see the cashmere sweaters prior to the pre-sale? If there is, and you happen to know the dates, please let me know. Thanks.
Not for the pre-sale no, probably just our annual one in October
Hi Simon, do you have an ETA on the casual styleguide?
See comments above Alex – it should launch next month
Shame that the pink oxford cloth will not be restocked, love that color too and my existing shirt needs replacing! Will buy all the other cloths for sure! Will have it shipped back to Italy, bunny how the world is full of boxes shipped back and forth.
Yeah I know.
I would like to bring back the solid pink at some point (presuming that’s what you mean). We’ll try and do it at least as cloth some time
Yes that’s what I meant, great to hear. For now I will have a enough shirtings laying around and the pink stripe will be a good substitute for the short term anyway. Great all around!
Hi Simon,
Will you always have the pearl cufflinks up for sale? I do mean to purchase them, but in the near future as opposed to immediately. Do let me know, thank you very much!
Yes, no plans to get rid of those at the moment. They’re made to order so there’s no problem in terms of how much stock we can afford
I might’ve missed a previous announcement about the new book with Jamie. Will that be released this year?
Replied to twice above Victor yes! Should be coming out next month
Fantastic, excited for its release! Thank you Simon.
Hi Simon,
Am I misremembering, or was there a new edition The Style Guide in the offing? Any updates on that?
OK now I’m going to insist on people reading the other comments! I know it’s a pain but the comments can’t all be the same questions or it kind of ruins the point.
Yes, coming out next month
Sorry for the confusion, Simon! I thought there were two separate projects: an all-new book (The Casual Style Guide) and also a new edition of the out-of-stock The Style Guide. I take it from on your reply that these are actually the same thing. Thanks for the help!
Ah no, sorry Jay, that’s my fault.
There are indeed both – the new book, and a reprint of the old one, coming out at the same time. We and various retailers will be selling both
Any chance that more of these products will be available in extra small?
Thanks!
It’ll be the same size ranges as previously I’m afraid Owen
Thanks for the reply. I was most interested in the Dartmoor and the Finest Polo. Have you ever seen the similar offerings from Colhays or John Smedley? They have something similar that looks a bit smaller.
So, Colhay’s is different to all our finest knitwear as that’s a carded yarn – thicker, more like a regular sweater, and like our Cashmere Crewneck.
The Dartmoor is the same kind of yarn as Smedley, non-carded, finer. But ours is better in terms of the yarn, the make and (for me this last one) the style. If you read the original articles on the Dartmoor this is all spelt out. Eg here.
Just found that the original Dartmoor was made by Smedley. So not as nice but maybe a good alternative for a slightly slimmer fit. Thank you!
Yes it was originally a collaboration, but the version we then did is better in various ways – see reply above
Simon do you have any news about the balmacan coat ? I am thinking this year is the year to invest in it but in what colors will it be available this year ?
We can’t confirm yet I’m afraid, but there should be two colours this year hopefully
Hello Simon
Glad to read that the Cashmere crewneck was a great success. With that in mind and considering there will be more colours available, I was wondering if a size XXL would also be available this time around.
Thanks
Good point Peter. We don’t normally but we could easily include that in the pre-order. I’ll make a note to do that
Exciting products Simon!
I was wondering if the tapered tshirts stay tapered or become a tad boxy if one were to go a size bigger than usual?
I don’t think they become boxy, no. The chest gets bigger as well as the waist, so they keep that same shape and that makes a noticeable difference
I wish PS would bring back the short sleeve Friday Polo.
Noted, thanks Dan
Hi Simon,
Are there plans to restock The Finest Polo in Charcoal at some point? It looks like a versatile and lovely color.
Thanks!
We’ll keep swapping them round and I’m sure the charcoal will come back at some point, yes
Ah I’m so pleased you posted this.
The Linen Harrington in dark brown is going to be a must for me. Will it be very close to the same brown as the Linen overshirt? Just weighing up my options!
Interested to see what the new colour of the Overshirt may be also. Would love a burnt umber or ecru.
March New Product and denim shirts are also all intriguing!
Similar yes, it is really nice.
Good to hear!
Hey Simon,
Any possibility of adding the finest crewneck to the pre-order programme? I missed out twice last year purely due to the time difference between the UK and Australia.
very keen to get my hands on one.
Tim
I’m afraid not for the moment, Tim, as we don’t have capacity to run too many things pre-order, but definitely noted for next time, and the finest crewnecks are coming back
Thanks Simon. I did see a return was on the cards in your article. I’ll certainly keep an eye out for them and if the sizing works for me, I’ll likely buy both the navy & charcoal. The tapered t-shirts are wonderful btw.
Great, and thanks Tim
+ vote for new colours – Finest Cardigan (e.g. soft yellow, silver grey), also for the Everyday Denim Shirt (soft yellow, ecru, caramel)
Thanks John, though the Everyday Denim was discontinued last year
+ vote for variation to the Finest Crewneck (with V-insert) also in a melange soft grey.
Hi Simon,
Is the navy reversible suede jacket mentioned above a navy version of the brown suede reversible bomber released last year, or an entirely different jacket? Also, will the new dark brown linen Harrington be available in size 8? Thank you!
Hey Ben,
Yes it’s the navy version of the same.
It won’t be available in an 8, no, sorry
No chance of a green short restock?
No, green was a lot less popular last year so we’re keeping it a little narrower
Will the shorts this year be the two pleat or one pleat model?
Two pleats
That is interesting. I have bought the beige and green and find the green more versatile and wear it more often.
Ok, good to know. Thanks Markus
I’ll second Markus. I bought all three colors over the years. I thought green I’d wear least, but have worn it the most. Am looking to pickup all three again to keep at my second flat (it’s half around the world, and am tired of packing everything each trip back and forth)
Hi Simon, are there any plans to restock the Finest Polo in charcoal later in the year? Thanks
Not later in the year, no, it would be next year
Is it possible to view the Nubuck Tote anywhere before purchasing it? I’m very keen on it from the photos but would like to see it in person to confirm.
Only at our pop-ups I’m afraid – details next week.
Any advice on ironing the oxford shirts? Creases are very hard to get out
It’s a heavier fabric, so it might be a little tougher than a fine dress oxford, but shouldn’t be that hard. Try hanging them up after you wash them, so the wrinkles drop out a bit, and then when you iron them do so damp (either by not letting them fully dry or by spraying them a little with the iron first)
That technique is good on linen too
Hi Simon,
Does the dartmoor and finest polo have similar sizing? I bought the Dartmoor in size L and they fit pretty good.
Yes they do – all the finest knitwear (the crewneck too) are the same fit
Hi Simon, I can’t wait to see the new outerwear for Spring/Summer!
It’s also good to hear that the black bullskin tote will come back as I’ve been considering ordering a brown bullskin tote for a while now but am just hesitant as my default shoes are in dark brown suede. Would you suggest I wait for it?
Many thanks,
Jack
I don’t think it matters to be honest Jack, no
Simon,
Re the linen Harrington. I’m a little confused. I tried to order the size 5 from Private White this week.
They are currently OOS and told me they won’t be producing any more this year !
Please clarify.
That said, now you have announced the brown, I think I’ll go for that.
Keep up the good work. I love PS products and have the Trench, the Donegal, everyday denim shirts, the Dartmoors , the Rugby and many Friday Polos.
The only one I no longer wear is the polo. The collar is too high and fit too snug.
Regards,
David
Cheers David, lovely to hear.
I’m not sure whether Private White are taking stock, but we certainly are
Thanks Simon. FYI I recontacted PW and they advised me they’d made a mistake. This is good news. With tailored items I tend to buy from them because of their alteration service. (I take a 5 with 5cm off the sleeve).
Thanks David
Hi Simon,
Looks like good things are coming so thanks for the update and hope the releases proceed smoothly over what looks to be a very busy few months for the PS store!
Apologies if this has been mentioned elsewhere, or if this is the wrong place ot ask – I’m just curious whether there is any info on when (or if) the chambray shirts will be restocked — seems most sizes are OOS at the moment.
Much appreciated!
Good point Adam! They are coming back but I can’t remember the exact month. I’ll check now and reply here plus include it in the article
Hoping for a very dark olive or brown in the cashmere crewnecks!
I’d like to see larger sizes in many of the pieces to accommodate larger men with a 50″ or larger chest.
I frankly feel it’s a bit unfair that larger or indeed possibly taller men are left out of these lovely products, even the undershirt!
Sorry, we would love to provide much bigger sizes but it’s hard to provide the ones at the edges as a small company – they often get left behind as stock
Just curious, do you have a big inventory of larger sizes in stock from previous years? If so, you could consider doing something like a “warehouse sale” if it is not being used. You could probably consider it for all sizes in past season products, depending on reader interest and stock availability. Just a thought!
Good point. We don’t have a lot, but we have some here and there. We have never done a sale, but I can see that would be a decent reason to do one
When I said “past season” I actually meant retired products, as your garments are indeed permanently in style 🙂
Dear Simon,
Could we make the pre-orders for the Rugby online or is it limited to pop-ups?
It’s all online, Vidit. As with previous pre-orders, it will all be done online. The pop-ups are just a nice way for people to see the extra available colours in person
For the Rugby, will we be able to place the order in August or September? Or is it mandatory to place the order while the pre-order’s window lasts?
If you want to pre-order, which means guaranteeing one and gives you access to all previous colours plus one new one, then you need to order in the window.
But, some of the colour will also be stocked normally in the Autumn. Same with the crewneck
Simon, can you suggest an alternative for the yellow oxford shirt/fabric since it’s not going to be available again anytime soon? I’ve been looking on the web but none of them seemed to be pale enough.
I can’t really Simone, no, that’s kind of why we created it in the first place. Less for the colour and more for the old-fashioned yarn combination, which you don’t find anywhere else
There are no plans for a restock of either the shirt or just the fabric? Don’t go breaking my heart.
No current plans for either, but I’m sure it will come back at some stage
Another vote to bring back the yellow!
Thanks Mark
Simon,
One more vote for the yellow here also at some point please.
Thanks.
i am hoping for a popover as Your new summer shirt, as You wrote about last year You were looking into!?
https://www.permanentstyle.com/2022/10/wear-loafers-with-jeans.html
or can You recommend one?
It isn’t Frank, and I don’t know any others I’m afraid
Any chance you’ll be doing some outerwear in houndstooth this fall/winter?
Nope, sorry Ryan
A blue reverse stripe would be nice for the oxford range! Have you considered it Simon?
I have, yes, and that would be nice in the future yes
This is all great news Simon, thank you! Like many others I’m sure, very excited about the crew neck preorder, will definitely be placing mine when the time comes.
On the undershirts, did Hamilton and Hare close? You reckon you’ll find a supplier to deliver some this year? I really need to stock up on a few this time.
They didn’t close, but the supplier they were using put up its minimums hugely, which made it uneconomic. We are hoping for this year, yes
Awoke to a very disappointing email from Hamilton and Hare this morning. I purchased several things from them going to well before your excellent undershirt offering. I hope that Olivia and her employees will be ok.
Yes it is a shame. I think it’s been a deliberate downsizing on their part rather than getting into difficulties
Hi Simon,
in your last update you mentioned a book about casual wear if I am not mistaken, any update on that?
Hey Hewad – it’s mentioned several times in the comments above… It’s coming out next month
Maybe you should add that in the article as it seems like a lot of readers are interested in getting one!
Yes you’re probably right, I will. Thanks Joe
Hi Simon: probably too late to add to the queue of comments, but I noticed the request for items in a size 50” chest, and another for size 8s. As a larger (ok XXL) guy, I echo the requests for more larger sizes. Many thanks for all of your efforts .
No worries, thanks for the vote Howie
Any chance you’re going to reissue the Button Down Polos?
No we’re sticking to the new collar style
Hi Simon, I can understand if you prefer to wait until the product launches to answer, but what is the thinking behind replacing the old Everyday Denim shirts? Were the old shirts deficient in some way that the new shirts will improve on? Also, will the new blue denim shirt be closer in shade to the Everyday Denim or the Lighter Everyday Denim? I preferred the latter. Thanks, and thanks again for this thorough and exciting roundup of things to come!
Hey,
No problem, I talked about this before. The issue with the Everyday Denim was that the material became too hard for the mill to produce and store, and for us to then do so as well, even customers sometimes, without it fading where it folded, as that is what it was designed to do.
And then, the vast majority of people preferred the finished shirts rather than the cloth, when the whole point was the cloth, as it enabled you to make a bespoke shirt that would fade like an industrially washed denim shirt. The finished shirts were not that different to a normal one.
So, we decided to switch to designing a perfect finished denim shirt instead. The colour will be more similar to the lighter denim, yes.
Any pop up planned Simon? Would like to try a couple of things on)
Hey – yes details coming on Wednesday
I felt one was in the air! I must have developed mind reading powers)
Hello Simon
Do you create anything with molloy&sons?
and Will there be a new design of tweed coat in winter?
Hi there,
No, no plans to work with Molloy & Sons currently. We used authentic Donegal Yarns yarn, but prefer to weave in the English mills closer to Private White.
There will be new materials in the coats, but probably not a new design
Hello Simon,
Can you share what colors or materials you’re thinking of for the Donegal Coat?
Thanks!
Not now, sorry Owen
Hi Simon and team
Just wondering whether you intend to restock the short-sleeve shirts at any point in the future? Apologies if this has been already covered or asked. I read the article and comments but couldn’t see any reference to this product.
Many thanks
Gary
Hey Gary,
No it hasn’t been asked before, but no I’m afraid there are no plans to restock those at the moment
Will the new denim shirts be “western shirts” or more smart than that. And – if western – can you say if the black one will be similar to the Roper shirt recently released by Rubato.
Best,
Smarter, not western
Hi Simon I assume you have tried the Rubato western shirts. If yes what did you think of them?
Yes, I’m trying a black one. Very nice. Particularly if you want that style of shirt but a little less western – only one popper on the pockets not two, that kind of thing
My first thought when hearing about the undershirts was “oh no!”
Am loving that product! While you’re interviewing new factories can you please get a mock up in a suitable mid-grey / Heathered grey for your consideration? Sometimes I want a nice and light shirt to wear under knits and button ups that isn’t white, just for a little variety or because a color contrast with white makes it more of a “look”. I think a nice grey like the grey tapered PS T could have broad appeal for the readership.
Thanks Calvin, and will do. It’s hard to do another colour because the minimums are so high (because it’s more of a technical piece) but we will certainly look
Ah yes, I hear you on the minimums. Very valid point for any business, especially small. True that even H&H only carries white and black…
I don’t think I’ve ever seen you run interest checks on new items (or color runs on existing) through the blog or Instagram, although maybe those are considered unreliable or just not reaching a wide enough audience?
We have done them, but they are a bit unreliable as you say – the most active commenters and the most active buyers don’t always overlap as much as you’d expect.
Also there’s a risk when you do it that you ask for votes on a new colour, and about 12 come up, of which you can only do one, so you end up disappointing most people.
Dear Simon,
Thank you for the update! For quite some time I have been thinking about purchasing something from the PS store. If you had to pick one item, the most versatile one, which item would you purchase from the PS store?
Keep up the good work!
With the best regards from The Netherlands, Dylan
I’d say one of the donegal coats or the cashmere rugby
I just got an email from Hamilton & Hare that they are closing down. 50% on everything with a code.
Yes I know Carl, it’s a real shame
Hi Simon,
Can I please clarify is/are Hamilton and Hare closing at a retail level or is the entire company closing down?
Thanks,
Yash
I think it’s just at a retail level but I don’t know the details Yash.
No worries Simon,
Apologies by the way, my earlier messaged should have read “can/would you clarify” and not “can I clarify”.
Thanks again.
Hi Simon,
Just received an email saying Hamilton and Hare’s online operation is closing soon and thanking everyone for their support.
Looks like the entire company is closing now which is a real shame and, without knowing the specifics, a reflection of how difficult it is for independent companies to survive in the UK compared to some other markets.
Yash
I didnt get that email even though Ive been a subscriber- are you able to share the code as I’d like to purchase some pieces before they closes…
GOODBYE-50
Hey Simon,
I remember your original inspiration for the donagal overcoat was a light brown color with red/orange specks. Have you ever considered making a version of that coat that has a brighter and more vibrant color palatte? I own your brown, gray/cream, and navy donegals, and I feel like a brighter palette would be a great addition to that collection!
Perhaps not that much brighter, but I can something warmer perhaps, yes
When will the preorder for March start? Are the release dates for each month fixed or still tentative?
They will continue to move a little bit. I’m hoping the pre-order for the two knits will start this Wednesday
I’m looking forward to the new denim shirts. Will this also be a collaboration with Luca Avitabile?
Also, your oxford shirts are really unique and I am the proud owner of a white, blue and blue striped one. Do you already have a plan for when you will reissue the solid pink shirt and – related to that – do you consider the striped pink shirt as versatile? Finally, a thought from me: it would be great if one day there was an lilac oxford shirt. I think lilac is an underrated shirt color and, in addition, most shirts that come in this color are too strong and not muted enough for me.
Hi Markus,
Actually no, the new denim shirts are being made with 100 Hands. We talked about that a little last year when I was wearing a sample of a black denim one here.
I think the pink stripe is actually more versatile than the solid pink. I wear it more and find it easier. It’s perhaps a touch smarter, but it goes with more things and introduces a nice bit of pattern.
Thanks for the thoughts on lilac, yes I can see that being nice. I love my linen one here.
Thank you. I just ordered the pink-striped oxford shirt.
Am looking forward to the denim shirts. I have your chambray shirt made in collab with 100 Hands, and I really like it.
Oh good, lovely to hear Markus
Hey Simon,
Any update on the release on the new piece of outerwear? Will that be a collab piece again with PWVC?
Hoping to put any new orders before I move in two weeks.
Not currently Daniel. We’re hoping to launch in 2-3 weeks but no certainty yet. There should be two launches this month still though
Interesting, Simon. I thought there was only one new product launch scheduled for this month?
One is the pre-order, one is the new outerwear piece although it looks like that will push into the beginning of April. And I’m hoping the cotton knits will be here early, so we have them for the pop-up. These things move around a little, but where we can it’s nice to have them in for the pop-up. Finest Polos are already confirmed they will be in for then
Hi Simon,
I’m eyeing a pair of the PS shorts this spring but a little confused on the fit and sizing.
First, the rise seems very low given preference for mid to high rise i’ve seen in previous articles. Is rise measured to the bottom of waist band or the top?
Second, the waist seems relatively generous. I’m a typically a size 48/32 but the posted measurements have the waist at 33.5″ for size 48. Should I expect shrinkage or should I size down? Or would you recommend having the waist taken in?
Any advice on fit you could provide would be much appreciated
Hey Adam,
The rise is a little low, yes. I find I prefer shorts a little lower than regular trousers – I’m not really tucking shirts into them, and it looks more casual perhaps.
On the waist, no there isn’t any shrinkage as they are pre-washed. I would look at the other measurements to make sure you’re happy sizing down though, as they waist is an easy thing to take in, or of course wear a belt, but nothing can really be let out.
Hope that helps
Will the brown Reversible Suede Bomber be restocked?
Yes, it is coming back, plus a new navy version, in May or hopefully even a little earlier
Thanks for the prompt reply, Simon.
Is the new dartmoor charcoal the same shade as the finest polo charcoal?
Yes – different yarn so there’ll be a slight difference, but we’ve aimed for the same colour
Hello Simon, I was wondering whether you plan to offer the Friday polo in the green color that you had for the old design? Thanks.
No, we don’t have any current plans for a green John
Thanks Simon. I can certainly imagine it not being as popular as navy and white, but I do think that the previous green and brown versions offered something different. I was wearing the navy one today and was thinking that green would have added a more casual touch. Cheers.
Thanks John. Yes I know what you mean. I’ll keep an eye out for the right shade
Hi Simon,
Long time reader and finally pulled the trigger on your overshirt. Probably my most used outerwear at the moment. I noticed there was a tobacco color listed on the shop but can’t find any photos of how it looks like. Do you have a post wearing it? I couldn’t find any using on your site.
Thanks
Mark
Hey Mark,
Ah, that’s just because it’s a new colour about to come in – about two weeks’ time. We may have some in the pop-up shop as well.
Excited to see how tobacco looks like. Hopefully you’ll have a few photos online soon. Thanks!
Thanks
Hi Simon,
The new cotton sweater seems very nice. I get that the new outerwear piece is delayed. Can you give us any information about what kind of clothing it is? Just so that we dont buy something else that is to similar.
We actually have a sample in the pop-up shop now, so sure I’m happy to Carl. It’s a suede overshirt, made with Rifugio to the same specifications and design as the linen overshirt. Really nice, in a pecan colour.
Nice. What price level is it?
It’ll be expensive – we’ve gone with the finest suede available, so on a par with Loro Piana, Purple Label etc. Price will be around £1900
Immediate regret. I just purchased the Connolly Suede cognag shirt last year.
I wish I would’ve waited… that sounds amazing. Perhaps another color might be possible for next year if it sells well?
Yes I’m sure we’d do that Daniel
Thanks for the answer.
Sounds tempting as I am looking for a summer suede jacket/blousom. But it sounds like the color will be a bit too light for me. I am thinking about ordering the new MTO suede jacket from Saman Amel in dark brown. The price level seems to be the same. Pockets are also quite important for me in summer outerwear.
Is this price estimate with otr without VAT? Thanks.
Good point – with VAT
Simon, if you had to choose one between this upcoming suede overshirt or the PWVC suede blouson, which one would you pick and why? Thanks.
I would pick based on style largely – which type of jacket I generally preferred, or thought looked best on me – and also on what else I have in my wardrobe (eg already an overshirt or a blouson)
I made the same mistake, having ordered the Connolly overshirt in xxl, and like nearly all clothes I’ve ordered from Italy, it’s a bit too snug (and now listed on eBay). Simon, you mentioned that the new PS suede model will be the same specs as your other overshirts, of which I have several and love, especially the sizing. Just would like to confirm that the measurements of the coming suede model will be the same as the prior overshirt. Many thanks
Yes they will be Howie
Suede overshirt looks killer—really excited for that one. A suede overshirt is such a great piece but the ones that are currently available are all slightly imperfect in ways that I’m certain PS will fix (color, collar, cut, length, etc).
Thanks! Yes it went down really well in the pop-up shop. Lovely to see people wearing it and get their opinions
Maybe my idea will stick with you subconsciously like when I suggested suede overshirt! 🙂 how about different “editions”? Like one, now, highest quality, another year, valstarino quality suede so cheaper price? I think suede from your bomber would look off made up like overshirt, but valstarino would still be great?
Thanks Martins, but we wouldn’t plan to change the quality
I would normally wait for your article before commenting on the Suede overshirt. However, I don’t want to miss my chance at purchasing it if it sells out like so many of your products do, so please excuse the early message.
I purchased Connolly’s suede overshirt after seeing your article years ago. It is has been a nice addition to my wardrobe, but I found the drop shoulder a little unusual and am always looking for the most versatile piece available.
What would you say the biggest difference between your new suede overshirt and the Connolly piece?
Hey David,
I completely understand, but I will refrain from talking about it in details like this for the moment if that’s OK. Otherwise you’re giving different information to different people, it engenders yet more questions, and you are always sacrificing presenting the piece properly and with the depth you think it deserves.
I hope you understand
Thank you
No problem, Simon. I will be patient.
Is it still scheduled to launch in March?
Thanks David, appreciated.
Slight delay, probably be mid-April.
Hi Simon,
Not sure if you ever considered this, but I would love to see a ready to wear outerwear piece for fall made from the PS Harris Tweed. The unique color is just so rich and beautiful.
I haven’t, but thank you Ben, that is a nice idea
Simon, preempting your linen overshirts going on sale, a question… I already own the navy version and love it. Versatile it certainly is and I probably wore it most often last year, over a shirt and tie and typically a pair of grey high twist wool trousers. Basically, in place of a jacket in the warmer months. I was all ready to purchase the brown but have had my head turned at the prospect of the tobacco. Can you advise on how versatile the tobacco might be? I’m thinking far more casual, which might not work as well if I was to chose to wear in a work environment ie with a collar and tie. Could you also let me know when we can expect to see its release? Thank you.
Hey Richard,
I think we’re looking at 2 weeks for release probably. I do think the brown would be more versatile for you. The tobacco would be nice too, but I think probably without the tie. Still, lovely with a blue shirt and those trousers, or perhaps a denim shirt.
Hi Simon – Apologies if I missed this in the long thread of questions below (although I don’t think it was mentioned as I have read most). When do you expect the Dartmoor to launch? I want to buy a couple of the finest polos that were just restocked but also want to order the Dartmoor at the same time as I’m shipping international and would prefer just one shipment.
Many thanks!
Hey Colin,
They won’t be for at least three weeks I’m afraid, so I’d order now if you can
Any word on when the charcoal Dartmoor will be re-stocked? Many thanks!
We’ve just received them, so have to check them all etc, but hopefully should be next week
Hi Simon, I received the Finest Polo restock message yesterday but just noticed that the cream in sizes small and medium are already sold out… Do you have any plans to restock them again soon?
Many thanks,
Jack
We are looking at a re-order already, yes
That’s great, do you have a rough timeline as to when this will be by any chance?
Not at the moment, sorry Jack
No worries, Simon. One more question, do you know if there were any orders of multiple sizes by the same customer for any potential for returns?
There were a handful, yes
Good to know. I will keep an eye on them. Thank you.
Any news about the tapered t-shirts?
Nothing definite I’m afraid yet
I had reached out at [email protected] to get a sense of sizing. Since I was late for the pre-order, I proceeded with the size that felt right. Am I able to update the size based on the recommendation from the team?
Is the new outerwear product coming out this month?
Hello Brendan,
Currently we are aiming for the end of the month for the new outwear pieces, it could end up being early may though.
Many thanks
Lucas
Hello, any chance the selvedge chambray will be restocked?
Hi Julian,
Yes they should be coming soon. I presume you’re on the waiting list?
I wasn’t sure if I was, but I am now!
Hi Simon,
I didn’t miss the oxford shirt/cloth re-stock, did I?
I don’t remember seeing that happening, yet.
Thank you!
It’s actually just happened Mike, and if you’re on the mailing list you should receive an email tomorrow announcing it. Feel free to go in and buy now though.
Going forward, a lot of these announcements are going to be made though email rather than on the site, because they’re are too many of them not to clog up the editorial. So make sure you’re signed up to the general shop mailing list
Excellent. Thank you, Simon!
Hi Simon,
Sorry to trouble you again. It looks like the cloth is replenished, but not the shirt. Will the shirt be replenished as well, or is it just the cloth offering from now on?
Hey Mike,
The shirts should have been as well. Would you mind contacting Lucas on the support email? He’s closer to it than I am – [email protected]
Thank you, sir! I was able to get the blue one.
I see the pink striped but not the plain pink. Is the plain pink not returning?
No plans at the moment, no
Understood.
Do you know if Canclini still offer the plain pink?
If not, would you still consider Mercer and Sons the closest facsimile?
No one offers this oxford except for us, it’s exclusive to PS.
Yes Mercer is probably the closest
Have the oxford shirts updated on the shop? Showing as sold out in most sizes (these don’t normally sell out so fast), plus I didn’t get the restock email.
Hey Alex,
Probably best to email Lucas on the support email if that’s ok, he’ll be closer on the stock points. I’m pretty sure we haven’t sold out as they’ve only just come in
Hello Simon,
I found a beautiful beige/khaki coloured shirt that Wythe released for summer in a cotton-linen blend;
https://wythenewyork.com/products/cotton-linen-twill-officers-shirt-camp-khaki?variant=43715834904707
I also noticed you have an upcoming summer shirt… and don’t want to regret my purchase things if I do go through with the purchase (as I have in the past – purchasing something then you releasing a similar product I always prefer more). Will your upcoming shirt be similar in color and/or style?
No it won’t David
Thank you. Has the date been decided yet for the shorts restock?
No, but they should be arriving soon
When will the Finest Polo be restocked in Navy and Cream?
In the summer, probably early July
Will the refreshed dark brown reflect around the same time as well? Or the brown has been restocked (as I see the sizes are available on the shop)?
We’re just restocking the navy and cream, as yes the brown is still available
Ahh got it! I got confused because in the post above, it said “Restocking in navy, cream and a new dark brown”. I thought there is a new brown on its way. Makes sense. I’ll go ahead with ordering brown and wait for the navy/cream.
Great
I wonder if April restock of Finest Knitwear already happened, and size L is gone based on the news of this – or it’s still on the way and coming?
Thanks!
Still on its way. Should be here in a couple of weeks
Any chance of us getting a restock of the finest polos in size S this season?
Yes, we’ve already ordered it and hope to have them in July
Dear Simon,
The multiple products I have purchased over the last few months have all been spectacular. I have noticed that there seems to be an increase in the amount of new products since 2023; and as a big fan something I am very happy about.
Seeing as the article also says we can ask about Fall/Winter… are there many brand new product launches scheduled? Would love maybe a new piece of outerwear or an exotic belt like the one Rubato used to sell *the alligator one.
Thank you. I’m not sure there are many new products – most things are just new colours of old things, but it does mount up over the years.
There are one or two possible new products for A/W, but we don’t have confirmation on any of them yet. We will certainly be restocking all the outerwear we make with Private White, and probably doing a new colour in one of them
Hi Simon, any update on the black denim shirt? Thanks
It should be here in a couple.of weeks…
Hi Simon, for the summer shirt can I ask whether it is intended to be worn tucked-in with a nice pair of trousers, or is it more casual/for untucking? I have been looking around at the various ‘resort’ shirts, including the rayon shirt you reviewed a couple of years ago and was wondering if it will be in a similar vein as that.
Also, is it still planned for May?
Thanks in advance.
It will be tucked in, smarter than those. And no, June now…
Is the Dartmoor in Cream and Charcol already sold out or it hasn’t be restocked just yet? I visited the Dartmoor page a few times in the month of April, but it has always reflected the Charcol and Cream in Medium as sold out. Did I miss it?
No, it was a little delayed but coming in this week.
Hi Simon, is the linen harrington restock still coming in May?
Yes Nic, it should hopefully be this Wednesday
Hi Simon – Any update on when the Dartmoor will be restocked? Thanks!
This week hopefully Colin
Simon, Have you an update on the tapered T shirts? I’m practically living in the blessed things!
Nice to hear Richard. We are hoping to get them at the end of the month
Should I be thinking about stock piling a couple of Dartmoor/Finest Polo(s) in Dark Brown and/or Navy to secure myself for future needs in case the product gets discontinued? OR Will Permanent Style most likely continue to stock/restock these products at least for the next two years?
It’s hard to say, but right now I’d say the Finest Polo isn’t going anywhere, but we might change the Dartmoor at some point
Thank you so much, Simon!
In terms of Dartmoor’s changes, would they pertain to changes in the pattern? I hope that a long sleeve version of a polo knitwear would continue to exist, right?
We’re not sure yet Vidit, but yes it’s very likely it would.
Have there been any updates regarding the PS Shorts restock? Was wondering if I could get some delivered before my Summer holiday.
Hello Ben,
These have been restocked today.
Best Lucas
Have the 46’s already sold out in Khaki and Navy? Or do I need to reset some cookies in my browser?
Thanks,
Ben
They have Ben. It looks like those were particularly popular, and the fact we had a few failing QC at the factory has restricted things somewhat
Ok no worries. I just wanted to double check it was not my browser acting up. Does subscribing to the waiting list on the store notify of inventory due to returns? And always wondered if it takes into account color or variant of the product.
It does usually on returns, yes, and it does take account of colour and variant
Just a quick note/thought… as I travel a lot and there are readers in different climates and seasons, would it be possible to stock the shorts year round?
Hey Ben,
We’d like to do that, but it’s not really feasible financially I’m afraid. Carrying stock through off-seasons is a big added expense. We do try to make some things available year-round that are less seasonal (eg the oxford shirts) but it’s not really possible with everything.
Makes sense. Thanks.
I have the beige and green shorts and would have bought the navy in 46. Well, next time.
Hi PS,
May I ask you if there are currently any plans for new jacketing cloths? Also, is there a plan for the Harris tweed to make a comeback?
Hey Nick,
The Harris tweed and the others will all be coming back, but the only other thing we’re working on is a probable collaboration with Fox. More on that in July
Hey Simon – any updates on denim shirts?
They are coming, hopefully should be launched in a couple of weeks
Any news about the Friday polo?
Nothing specific, but shouldn’t be long
Simon, have you got any updates on the black bullskin tote?
Hey Sam,
We should be getting them later this month hopefully, and we’ve ordered more stock of the brown too
That’s nice to hear. I’ve been waiting for long for them to be restocked.
Simon, if you could only have one bag, would you choose a dark brown or black tote? I presume that the dark brown one will be a more versatile option, similar to shoes, but my outfit already has many dark browns in terms of jackets and shoes. In this case, would the black tote be better? But another issue is that I often like to wear warm colours. Thanks!
In that case I would still go with brown, yes… I guess maybe make it a brown leather like my signature tote from Clegg – that’s not a brown I would otherwise wear at all
Did you mean chestnut leather like yours (https://www.permanentstyle.com/2023/04/ways-to-wear-a-sweater-over-the-shoulders.html) will be a better choice for me?
yes
