Yes, generally something a bit heavier and not soft will be sharper

On colours, it's the same as the rest of tailoring really - navy and grey the smartest, then neutrals like cream. Green, brown etc more casual, but smarter the darker and less of a strong colour they are.

Thank you, this is very helpful!

Just a few things, when you say a 'sharp' linen, would that refer to a heavier weight material that is not as soft?

Also, which colours would be more casual, and which smarter?

Yes I don't like drawstrings as much for that reason, I wear them but only with things untucked.

Belt loops always going to be more casual than side adjustors, but really it's about the material - how soft or sharp a linen, and what colour.
A pair in each could certainly work well.

For smart linens, any of the regular tailoring retailers. For more casual ones, yes they're generally lacking except for the drawstring options.

Hi Simon,

I have a query that relates both to the smart and casual trouser sections. How do you define casual in comparison to smarter linen trousers, aside from weight? I would think drawstring is very casual, but where do features like belt loops and side adjusters land in the equation? I've always had trouble styling drawstring trousers (do I tuck my shirt in, let it hand loose? etc), so typically shy away from that option. Would you suggest both a casual pair and a smarter pair for a capsule wardrobe, considering linens are more on the casual side anyway?

Secondly, where would you suggest looking for casual and smart linens? I've always struggled to find many offerings.

There are elements of house style, but it's more around things like finish, handwork, and perhaps a preference on things like pleats - but those can be changed easily at your request.

So no, no danger in having both from different places. Just make sure if you make a suit that way, that you get the cloth at the same time so it exactly matches. And consider the proportions of each in relation to each other

Hi Simon, I have a question. Do house styles exist for trousers?
I would like to order a pair of flannel trousers, but the tailor who made my jackets lives very far away from me. I used to enjoy travelling, but the cost and time involved in travelling all that way for a pair of trousers is just way of too much. So I’m considering of asking another tailor who is relatively close by, but I’m wondering if it’s a risky have a trouser from other tailor or if it won’t have much impact. Both tailors have a very different background. (English/Continental) Thank you!

Sorry Josh, I didn't register that you were looking for trousers rather than a jacket - is that right?

A worsted like this from Fox would be nice, just not as breezy and cool as a high-twist. It's basically the same yarn, just not twisted, so not as breathable but without that crispy, dry handle either

Hmm. Nothing off the top of my head, and it's not so common a summer colour. But I'd look through the summer jacketing books

Hey Simon,
I hope everything is going well. I am in search of some nice summer fabric options that look good in charcoal other than high twist wool. Can you recommend any?
